Myth Fact
Cats have nine lives Only one life! They’re agile and have a righting reflex, but falls and accidents still cause serious harm or death
Always land on their feet The righting reflex helps, but needs enough height — falls from low places or high windows often cause injury
Black cats = bad luck Superstition from medieval times; in UK, Scotland, Japan, and maritime lore, they’re seen as good luck
Cats are aloof and don’t bond Most form secure attachments similar to dogs/babies; they just show love differently — head-butts, slow blinks, staying close
Milk is good for them Most adult cats are lactose intolerant — cow’s milk causes diarrhoea and upset stomach; fresh water is best
Cats are nocturnal Actually crepuscular — most active at dawn and dusk, matching their wild hunting habits
Purring always means happy Also self-soothing when stressed, sick, or in pain — always check body language too

Common Care Mistakes to Avoid

Handling & Training

- Scruffing adults: Only works on kittens — causes pain, fear, and broken trust in grown cats
- Punishment/hitting: Makes fear/aggression — use positive reinforcement only
- Chasing: Seen as a predator attack — destroys confidence
- Pulling tails: Linked to spinal nerves — can cause permanent incontinence

Daily Care

- Too many treats: Over 10% of calories unbalances diet and causes obesity
- No hiding spots: Need safe retreats — lack of space = chronic stress
- Forced interaction: Let them come to you; pushing them away repeatedly makes them feel rejected
- Ignoring body language: Twitching tail, flattened ears = “stop now!”

Environment & Safety

- Sudden big changes: Cats love routine — rearranging furniture, new pets, or loud noise causes anxiety
- Strong scents: Their nose is 14× more sensitive — citrus, perfumes, cleaners are stressful
- Regular collars: Use breakaway safety collars only — others can strangle if caught
- Car check: Warm engines attract cats in cold weather — bonnet, wheel arches, tyres before starting
- Permanent single‑room confinement: Cruel long‑term — causes obesity, stress, and behaviour issues; only for short‑term recovery/introduction

Feeding & Health

- Human foods: Onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol, cooked bones are toxic
- Skipping neutering: Prevents cancers, roaming, spraying, and unwanted kittens
- Declawing: Painful amputation of bone — illegal in many countries; use scratch posts instead

Quick History Note

- Once sacred in Egypt (linked to goddess Bastet)
- Turned “evil” after Pope Gregory IX’s 1233 decree — cats were killed in huge numbers, which actually made the Black Plague worse by letting rat populations explode
