Bengal & Savannah Grooming Guide

Bengal Cats
Coat & Shedding
Bengals have a short, dense, glossy coat with moderate shedding throughout the year. Shedding is usually heavier during spring and autumn.

Brushing

Brush once or twice each week using a slicker brush followed by a fine-tooth comb to:
Remove loose hair.
Distribute natural skin oils.
Reduce hairballs.
Maintain the coat's glossy appearance.

Bathing

Bathing is rarely necessary and should only be done when the cat is genuinely dirty. Frequent bathing removes the coat's natural protective oils and may dry the skin.

Nail Care

Trim nails every 2–3 weeks using cat-specific nail clippers.

Ear Care

Inspect the ears weekly for:

Redness.
Unpleasant odour.
Wax build-up.
Discharge.
Clean only with a veterinarian-approved ear cleaner when necessary.

Dental Care

Brush the teeth daily using cat-specific toothpaste and a feline toothbrush. Dental treats or chews can provide additional oral health support but should not replace brushing.

Health Checks

Monitor for:
Excessive grooming.
Food or environmental allergies.
Flea allergy dermatitis.
Ear infections.

Savannah cats have a short, coarse coat that sheds very little and requires relatively low maintenance.

Brushing

Brush once each week with a soft-bristle brush to remove loose hair and maintain a healthy shine.
Bathing

Many Savannah cats enjoy water. Bathe only when required using a mild, unscented shampoo formulated specifically for cats. Dry the ears thoroughly afterwards to help reduce the risk of infection.

Nail Care

Trim nails every week. Their high activity levels and fast-growing nails increase the risk of splitting or snagging.

Ear Care

Inspect and clean the ears regularly, ensuring they remain clean and dry, particularly after bathing.

Dental Care

Daily tooth brushing is strongly recommended to maintain good oral health.

Health Checks

Monitor for:
Skin irritation or itching.
Eye problems.
Signs of inherited conditions.
Speak with your veterinarian about health screening and appropriate genetic testing for conditions such as:

Pyruvate Kinase (PK) Deficiency.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Veterinarian-approved ear cleaner.
Mild, unscented cat shampoo.
Cat toothbrush.

Weekly Grooming Schedule

Daily
Brush teeth.
Check the eyes and skin for any changes.

Weekly
Brush the coat.
Trim nails.
Inspect and clean the ears if required.
Bathing

Bengal: Only when necessary.

Savannah: As needed.

Every 6–12 Months

Veterinary health examination.

Discuss appropriate health screening and genetic testing, particularly for breeding Savannah cats or those with a relevant family history.
