Paw-some Superstars – What Are Cat Eyes Telling Us?
The story is about a grandmother who notices something unusual one evening. As her cats move around the room in the dark, their eyes seem to shine.
She is surprised and wonders, “Why do their eyes glow at night?”
Suddenly, the Paw-some Superstars appear—the Asian Leopard Cat, African Serval, Bengal and Savannah.
It is time for another mission.
The Bengal transforms into an Asian Leopard Cat, revealing its wild ancestry, while the Savannah transforms into an African Serval.
The Superstars explain that cats have eyes specially adapted for seeing in low light. Behind the retina is a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. It reflects light back through the eye, giving the retina another chance to use that light. This is what can make a cat’s eyes appear to glow when light shines into them at night.
They also teach Grandma about other special features of cat eyes. Their vertical pupils can become very narrow in bright light and open much wider in darkness. Their large corneas and lenses help gather light, while a third eyelid helps protect the surface of the eye.
But the Superstars have another lesson: cat eyes don’t only help cats see—they can also provide clues about how a cat may be feeling.
Relaxed, half-closed eyes can appear when a cat is comfortable. A slow blink may be associated with a relaxed, friendly interaction. Wide pupils can occur during excitement, play, fear, darkness or surprise, while narrowed eyes combined with a tense body and flattened ears can sometimes accompany irritation or conflict.
Grandma quickly learns that you should never judge a cat’s emotions from its eyes alone.
The ears, tail, whiskers, posture, sounds, lighting and situation all matter.
The Superstars also remind her that eyes can sometimes reveal health problems. Persistent squinting, redness, discharge, cloudiness, obvious pain or a sudden change in the pupils should be checked by a veterinarian.
Grandma smiles.
“Now I understand. Their glowing eyes aren’t magic—they’re part of an amazing visual system designed for life in low light.”
