Paw-some Superstars – Listen When a Cat Says “Stop!”
The story is about a child who loves cats and wants to play with one. He approaches excitedly, but the cat isn't in the mood for attention.
As the child reaches towards the cat, it becomes uncomfortable.
“HISSSS!”
The child is surprised. He doesn't understand why the cat doesn't want to play.
Suddenly, the Paw-some Superstars appear—the Asian Leopard Cat, African Serval, Bengal and Savannah. Their mission is to teach the child how cats communicate through body language.
The Bengal transforms into an Asian Leopard Cat, and the Savannah transforms into an African Serval, revealing their wild ancestry and activating their Superstar powers.
The Superstars explain that a hiss isn't a cat being “naughty.” It is an important warning that can mean:
“I'm uncomfortable. I'm frightened. Please give me some space.”
They teach the child to recognise the earlier warning signs that can appear before a bite or scratch. A cat may turn its head away, flatten or rotate its ears, flick its tail, tense its body, freeze, crouch, growl or hiss.
If those warnings aren't respected, the cat may feel it has no other option.
The cat might arch its back and raise its fur to appear larger. It may turn sideways, preparing itself to escape or defend itself. If the unwanted interaction continues and the cat feels trapped, the behaviour can escalate to swatting, lunging, grabbing or biting.
The child begins to understand.
“So when the cat hisses, I shouldn't keep trying to touch it?”
“Exactly!” say the Superstars. “Stop, move away calmly and give the cat space.”
They explain that the child should never chase or corner a frightened cat. Instead, he can wait and allow the cat to decide whether it wants to approach him.
Later, the child sits quietly with a toy nearby. This time, he doesn't grab the cat or force it to play.
After a while, the cat approaches him voluntarily.
The child smiles.
“Now I understand. Playing together is fun when the cat wants to play too.”
The Paw-some Superstars proudly announce:
MISSION COMPLETE!
The story's message is simple: cats communicate before they resort to biting or scratching. Learning their body language and respecting their boundaries can prevent fear, stress and injuries while building a stronger relationship between children and cats.
